Amami Tambourine Necklace with Relikaryo Pendant

During the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines, jewelry was used by Spanish colonizers as a tool to spread Catholicism. Necklaces resembling rosaries were referred to as 'rosarios' while the pendants were referred to as 'relicarios' as they once used to house relics, religious imagery and sacred objects. It was often worn to complete the traje de mestiza (often called the Maria Clara dress) that was popularized in 19th century Philippines.

Today, these necklaces no longer follow its original sequence, and pendants have started to adopted nature-themed motifs such as flowers, leaves and even fruits.

These traditional tambourine necklaces may bring back memories of your mother or your lola. They have become popular family heirloom pieces, carefully passed on from one generation to the next.

Each one taking at least a month to MONTH to make, this necklace is one of our most difficult and time-consuming pieces to make. This wearable piece of art showcases the best of Filipino craftsmanship. It is a remnant of an era gone by, one bearing rich stories of our past and cultural traditions that are meant to be shared.
